This research focuses on the analysis of textbooks intended for 9th-grade junior high school students, which are specifically designed according to the latest curriculum known as the Merdeka curriculum. The purpose of this study is to determine the suitability of the textbook content for 8th-grade students based on Thomlinsons theory. The main data source for this study is the English textbook English for Nusantara SMP/MTS Grade IX, published by the Ministry of Education, Culture, and Research in 2022. Using a descriptive approach and document analysis, this study focuses on the content of the textbook, examining elements such as impact, learner comfort, building confidence, relevance, language exposure, and more. The textbooks content was examined during data collection, and the analysis included criteria objective evaluations based on Tomlinsons sixteen criteria, as evidenced by fifteen of the sixteen criteria being satisfied, such as engaging content, learner participation, and a variety of learning options. However, the textbook lacks facilitation of materials and exercises that can make students left and right brains work in balance.

The research analyzed the English for Nusantara textbook using Tomlinsons theoretical framework and standards for assessing the quality of instructional material. The research indicates that the textbook largely complies with Tomlinsons requirement for useful language learning material, effectively engaging students, increasing self-esteem, offering pertinent content, modeling real-world language use, and adjusting to a range of affective attitudes and learning styles. However, the textbook falls short in maximizing learning potential by encouraging intellectual, aesthetic, and emotional engagement, stimulating both left and right brain activities.

Further research could investigate the effectiveness of incorporating more authentic language materials, such as real-world conversations and texts, into the textbook to better prepare students for practical communication. Additionally, studies could explore the impact of differentiated instruction, tailoring task complexity to varying proficiency levels, on student engagement and learning outcomes within the Merdeka Curriculum framework. Finally, research could examine the integration of activities designed to stimulate both left and right brain activity, such as creative tasks and visual learning exercises, to enhance the overall learning experience and address the identified limitation of the current textbook. These investigations would contribute to the ongoing refinement of English language teaching materials in Indonesia, ensuring they are aligned with current pedagogical best practices and the diverse needs of learners.
