This research aims to investigate the role of age as a moderator in the contribution of mindfulness to emotion regulation abilities in adults in Indonesia. This research used a quantitative approach with a total number of 234 participants, consisting of 81 young adults and 153 middle adults, with a mean score of 43.33. Data were collected using the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale-Short Form (DERS-SF) and Mindfulness Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS) questionnaires, which were distributed online. The research results show that adult individuals with low levels of mindfulness have low emotional regulation abilities, and age does not play a role as a moderator in the role of mindfulness on emotional regulation abilities. The uneven distribution based on participant domicile is a limitation that needs to be considered in future research.

This research demonstrates that age does not moderate the relationship between mindfulness and emotional regulation in young and middle-aged adults. The findings indicate that mindfulness significantly contributes to emotional regulation abilities in adults. Therefore, enhancing mindfulness is crucial for improving emotional regulation skills in this population.

Future research should explore the influence of cultural factors on the relationship between mindfulness and emotional regulation in Indonesia, potentially utilizing qualitative methods to gain deeper insights into the nuances of emotional experiences within the Indonesian context. Furthermore, investigating other emotion regulation strategies beyond mindfulness, such as cognitive reappraisal or expressive suppression, could provide a more comprehensive understanding of emotional regulation processes in adults. Finally, longitudinal studies are needed to examine how mindfulness and emotional regulation abilities change over time in Indonesian adults, considering potential life events and developmental stages, and to determine whether interventions designed to enhance mindfulness can lead to lasting improvements in emotional well-being and resilience. These studies should aim to include a more diverse and representative sample from various regions of Indonesia to enhance the generalizability of the findings.
