This research aims to analyze the role of vocabulary mastery in improving students speaking skills at SMPN 4 Pematangsiantar. Speaking is a crucial language skill that enables students to communicate effectively, and vocabulary plays a fundamental role in supporting this ability. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative, involving interviews with English teachers, questionnaires to students, and a simple speaking test. The participants were two English teachers and three students selected purposively. The findings indicate that vocabulary mastery significantly contributes to students speaking performance, especially in fluency, accuracy, and confidence. Teachers affirmed that without adequate vocabulary knowledge, students struggle to express ideas clearly. Moreover, students who had higher vocabulary mastery showed better performance in speaking tests. This study emphasizes the importance of vocabulary instruction as a foundation for developing speaking skills in English learning.

Based on the research conducted at SMPN 4 Pematangsiantar, it was concluded that vocabulary mastery significantly influences the improvement of students speaking skills.A strong vocabulary facilitates students ability to communicate confidently and effectively in English.However, students fear and lack of courage to practice can hinder their speaking development, even with adequate vocabulary knowledge.Therefore, creating a comfortable and supportive learning environment is crucial for fostering students confidence and encouraging active participation in English language practice.

Berdasarkan temuan penelitian ini, beberapa saran penelitian lanjutan dapat diajukan. Pertama, penelitian lebih lanjut dapat dilakukan untuk mengeksplorasi strategi pengajaran kosakata yang paling efektif untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa, dengan mempertimbangkan gaya belajar dan kebutuhan individual. Kedua, studi komparatif dapat dilakukan untuk membandingkan efektivitas berbagai metode pengajaran kosakata, seperti penggunaan aplikasi pembelajaran bahasa, permainan kosakata, atau pendekatan berbasis tugas. Ketiga, penelitian dapat difokuskan pada pengembangan instrumen penilaian yang lebih komprehensif untuk mengukur kemampuan berbicara siswa, yang mencakup aspek-aspek seperti kelancaran, akurasi, pengucapan, dan penggunaan kosakata yang tepat. Penelitian-penelitian ini diharapkan dapat memberikan wawasan yang lebih mendalam tentang bagaimana meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa secara efektif dan berkelanjutan, serta memberikan kontribusi pada pengembangan praktik pengajaran bahasa Inggris yang lebih inovatif dan relevan.
