Previous studies have emphasized the classical role of pesantren as centers for the transmission of turats knowledge, but have been limited in explaining how pesantren have transformed through processes of adaptation, acculturation, and assimilation in the modern context. This study aims to analyze the integration of local cultural values with Islamic education in Lombok, while also formulating a model of glocal Islamic pedagogy that is relevant to the demands of the 21st century. This research employs a qualitative approach using ethnographic and historical methods. Data was collected over four months through semi-structured interviews with religious scholars, traditional leaders, and community members, participatory observation at pesantren in Central and West Lombok, and analysis of documents from historical archives and relevant literature. Data analysis was conducted thematically through reduction, presentation, and verification using triangulation of sources and methods. Preliminary findings reveal three main stages of Islamization in Lombok: adaptation through the contextualization of Islamic teachings and hybrid pesantren curricula; acculturation through the harmonization of Sasak traditions such as Wayang Sasak with Islamic education; and assimilation, marked by the full integration of Islamic values into the local socio-cultural identity. This study contributes to the development of Islamic education theory by offering a “glocal Islamic pedagogy framework that combines classical heritage with contemporary competencies. These findings are expected to support the development of contextual and sustainable Islamic education models that are locally relevant yet globally competitive.
The Islamization process in Lombok is a result of the dynamic interaction between Islamic education and the local Sasak culture.Through adaptation, acculturation, and assimilation, pesantren have successfully integrated Islamic values into the social and cultural life of Lombok without eliminating local identity.This study confirms the development of a glocal Islamic education model, demonstrating pesantrens ability to preserve religious heritage while responding to modern demands.
Further research should investigate the long-term impact of the glocal Islamic pedagogy model on student outcomes, including their socio-economic mobility and religious commitment. Additionally, a comparative study examining the adaptation strategies of pesantren in Lombok with those in other regions of Indonesia could reveal best practices and contextual factors influencing success. Finally, exploring the role of digital technology in enhancing the integration of local culture and Islamic teachings within pesantren curricula presents a promising avenue for future research, particularly focusing on how technology can facilitate the preservation and dissemination of Sasak cultural heritage alongside Islamic knowledge, ultimately fostering a more holistic and relevant educational experience for students and strengthening the pesantrens role as a dynamic center for both religious and cultural preservation in the face of globalization. This research should be conducted through qualitative methods, including in-depth interviews with students, teachers, and community leaders, as well as ethnographic observations of classroom practices and community engagement activities, to gain a nuanced understanding of the complex interplay between tradition, modernity, and technology in shaping the future of Islamic education in Lombok.
