This study aims to identify and analyze the types of language style used by characters in Elysium, a science-fiction movie directed by Neill Blomkamp. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method, analyzing character utterances using Martin Joos theory of language styles (frozen, formal, consultative, casual, and intimate). The study found that all five styles appear in the movie, with casual style being the most frequent. Frozen and formal styles were used in official or robotic interactions, consultative styles in semi-formal settings, and intimate style minimally due to the films plot. This study contributes to sociolinguistic and stylistic analysis by applying Joos theory to modern cinematic discourse, highlighting the role of context, relationship, and setting in influencing language variation in film.

The analysis reveals that Elysium effectively utilizes all five of Martin Joos language styles to reflect social contexts and character relationships.Formal and frozen styles dominate authoritative interactions, while consultative and casual styles represent negotiation and solidarity. The infrequent use of intimate style adds emotional depth. These stylistic variations underscore the films themes of power, resistance, and human connection, demonstrating how language shapes character dynamics and conveys sociolinguistic depth.

Further research could explore the application of computational linguistics to analyze language patterns in Elysium, potentially revealing subtle ideological biases embedded within the dialogue. Investigating the impact of non-verbal cues, such as facial expressions and body language, alongside the verbal language used by characters could provide a more holistic understanding of communication dynamics within the film. Additionally, a comparative study examining language styles across multiple science fiction films with similar dystopian themes could illuminate broader trends in how language is used to construct social hierarchies and power imbalances in cinematic narratives, building upon the findings of this study to create a more comprehensive understanding of the relationship between language, power, and social commentary in science fiction cinema. These investigations would contribute to a richer understanding of the complex interplay between language, social context, and cinematic storytelling.
