English proficiency poses a challenge in several Asian countries, particularly in Indonesia where it is considered a foreign language, unlike its status as a second language in countries like Malaysia and Singapore. This situation impacts Indonesian learners ability to master English, including English tenses, which are essential for language comprehension and sentence construction. This study evaluates learners proficiency in recognizing English tenses, focusing on second-semester students. It is anticipated that improved tense recognition will aid in English language learning, particularly in transforming active voice into passive voice.

The study concludes that students demonstrate a good understanding of English tenses, with Past Continuous being the most readily recognized.However, Present Future Perfect presents the greatest challenge, although still recognized correctly by over half of the respondents.The differences in recognition stem from the complexity of the tenses and the contrast between English grammar and the Indonesian language system.Ultimately, the research indicates a foundational level of competence in English tense recognition among the students studied.

Further research could explore the effectiveness of incorporating more contextualized examples, particularly those relevant to students daily lives, to improve the recognition of more complex tenses like Present Future Perfect. Additionally, a comparative study examining the impact of explicit versus implicit instruction on tense mastery could provide valuable insights for pedagogical approaches. Finally, investigating the correlation between students proficiency in Bahasa Indonesia grammatical structures and their challenges with English tenses could reveal underlying linguistic interference patterns and inform targeted interventions to enhance English language learning outcomes. These investigations, building upon the current study, will contribute to a more nuanced understanding of the challenges Indonesian learners face and ultimately lead to more effective English language teaching strategies.
