The development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology in higher education has influenced various academic practices of students, including in the process of writing theses. This study aims to analyze the effect of AI use on student motivation in completing their theses. The research used a quantitative approach with a survey design involving 35 students from the Japanese Language Education Study Program at Surabaya State University who were writing their theses. Data were collected through a questionnaire with a five-point Likert scale that measured the level of AI use and student motivation in the thesis-writing process. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics and simple linear regression analysis. The results showed that the level of AI usage was in the high category with an average score of 3.60, while student motivation was in the moderate-to-high category with an average score of 3.12. The regression analysis results showed that AI usage had a positive and significant effect on student motivation in completing their thesis with a coefficient of determination of 0.510. These findings indicate that the use of AI technology can serve as a learning-support tool that helps students understand academic concepts, organize research ideas, and improve efficiency in the thesis-writing process. However, student motivation is not only influenced by the use of technology, but also by various internal and external factors such as academic support, psychological conditions, and the learning environment.

This study demonstrates that the use of Artificial Intelligence has a positive and significant impact on students motivation to complete their theses.These findings suggest that AI technology supports students psychological well-being, enhancing their perceived competence and academic autonomy.However, AI use is not the sole determinant of motivation, as other internal and external factors also play a role.Therefore, the integration of AI should be guided by clear ethical guidelines and a focus on developing students critical thinking skills.

Penelitian lanjutan perlu dilakukan untuk menginvestigasi lebih dalam mengenai bagaimana tingkat literasi digital mahasiswa memoderasi hubungan antara penggunaan AI dan motivasi menulis tesis, mengingat temuan penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa AI hanyalah salah satu faktor yang memengaruhi motivasi. Selain itu, penelitian kualitatif dapat dilakukan untuk mengeksplorasi pengalaman mahasiswa dalam menggunakan AI untuk menulis tesis, termasuk tantangan dan manfaat yang dirasakan, serta bagaimana mereka mengelola potensi risiko seperti plagiarisme. Terakhir, penelitian perlu dilakukan untuk mengembangkan model pembelajaran yang mengintegrasikan AI secara efektif dan etis dalam proses penulisan tesis, dengan mempertimbangkan kebutuhan mahasiswa dan prinsip-prinsip pedagogis yang baik, sehingga dapat meningkatkan motivasi dan kualitas tesis mahasiswa secara berkelanjutan. Penelitian ini diharapkan dapat memberikan rekomendasi praktis bagi perguruan tinggi dalam merancang kebijakan dan program pelatihan yang mendukung pemanfaatan AI secara bertanggung jawab dan produktif dalam dunia akademik.
