Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) is an approach that prioritizes meaningful interaction and student engagement to enhance language proficiency particularly in speaking. In todays globalized world, where communication is key, CLT proves valuable for English as a Second Language (ESL) learners who often struggle with limited vocabulary, low confidence, and insufficient speaking practice. This literature review, analyzing 30 studies from 2017 to 2025, affirms CLTs effectiveness in boosting fluency, accuracy, vocabulary, and confidence through interactive activities such as role-plays and discussions. It also fosters creativity, autonomy, and enjoyment in learning. Despite these benefits, challenges like overcrowded classrooms, limited resources, insufficient teacher training, and student anxiety can hinder CLTs success. To address these, the study recommends enhanced teacher training, resource-rich and supportive environments, confidence-building activities, and integrating CLT into broader educational policies, including MTB-MLE in the Philippines. In conclusion, CLT is not just a technique, its a transformative approach that empowers learners to use language with confidence and real-world purpose.

The reviewed studies confirm that Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) is a very effective approach to improve students speaking skills.Evidence indicates that CLT enhances fluency, accuracy, vocabulary growth, and confidence through interactive activities. However, successful implementation depends on factors like teacher training, resources, and addressing student anxiety. With appropriate implementation, CLT prepares students for real-world communication.

Further research should investigate the optimal methods for integrating CLT into diverse educational contexts, particularly in resource-constrained settings, to maximize its impact on speaking skill development. Additionally, studies could explore the long-term effects of CLT on learners communicative competence and their ability to navigate real-world language use beyond the classroom. Finally, research is needed to develop and evaluate targeted teacher training programs that equip educators with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively implement CLT, address student anxieties, and create supportive learning environments, building upon existing recommendations for enhanced professional development and resource allocation. These investigations, informed by the challenges and benefits identified in this review, will contribute to a more nuanced understanding of CLTs potential and guide future pedagogical practices.
