This article initially explores the Minang-origin tarekat in Medan City. These Minang-origin tarekats are scattered in various regions and have an activity base in Medan City. The distinguishing element of a Minang tarekat from other communities is related to the ethnic identity within it, both in the doctrines and rituals taught to the tarekat. To understand the tarekat from Minang, a related research question is asked about the genealogy and role of the community from Minang in Medan City. This research found several tarekats from Minang, namely the Tarekat Syattariyah (TS), the Tarekat Sammaniyah wa Naqsyabandiyah (TSN), the Tarekat Naqsyabandiyah Kadirun Yahya (TNKY), and the Tarekat Naqsyabandiyah Yayasan Jabal Abi Qubis (TNYJAQ). Meanwhile, the role played by the tarekat from Minang relates to spiritual education, such as Sufism recitation, which is actively carried out in surau or at home, and mysticism activities which are practiced according to a specified time. Finally, this study confirms that Minang-origin tarekats in Medan City have an important role in the spiritual education of the people of Medan City.

The study concludes that Minang-origin tarekats significantly influence the spiritual landscape of Medan City. These tarekats, including TS, TSN, TNKY, and TNYJAQ, are rooted in Minang traditions and maintain connections to their origins. They play a crucial role in providing spiritual education through Sufism recitation and mystical practices, contributing to the spiritual well-being of the Medan community.

Further research should investigate the dynamic interplay between Minang-origin tarekats and local Medan cultural practices, exploring how these interactions shape religious expression and community identity. A comparative study examining the differences in theological approaches and ritual practices among the various Minang-origin tarekats in Medan City could reveal nuanced understandings of Sufi traditions. Additionally, research could explore the socio-economic impact of these tarekats on the Minang diaspora in Medan, investigating how they contribute to social cohesion, economic empowerment, and the preservation of cultural heritage. These investigations will provide a more comprehensive understanding of the role of Minang-origin tarekats in the broader context of Indonesian Islam and diaspora studies, offering valuable insights for both academic and community stakeholders.
