This research aimed to find out the improvement of students reading comprehension in terms of finding main ideas and meaning of words at the students of SMPN 4 Libureng in the 2012/2013 academic year. This research used A Classroom Action Research that consisted of two cycles. The sample of this research consisted of 22 students, those consisted of six women and twelve men. The researcher obtained the data by using reading test and observation sheet. The results of the students reading test in cycle I and cycle II had significantly different scores. There was a better increase of gains by students at the end of action in the second cycle. In cycle I, the students achievement of main ideas was 6.09, but after evaluation in cycle II the students reading comprehension became 7.62. The other hand the students meaning of words was improved too from cycle I to cycle II, whereas in the students achievement of meaning of words was 6.13, but after evaluation in cycle II the students achievement became 7.74. From the findings indicated that there was improvement in the students reading comprehension from cycle I to cycle II, whereas in cycle I students achievement reading comprehension was 23.81, but after evaluating in cycle II the students reading comprehension became 25.69. While the standard target achievement KKM 66. From these findings, the researcher made conclusion that by using an eclectic approach could improve the students reading comprehension achievement.

The research demonstrates that utilizing an eclectic approach effectively enhances students reading comprehension.The implementation of this approach, combining basal reader and language experience methods, resulted in significant improvements in students ability to identify main ideas and understand the meaning of words.The study concludes that an eclectic approach is a valuable tool for improving reading comprehension achievement.

Berdasarkan hasil penelitian ini, terdapat beberapa saran penelitian lanjutan yang dapat dilakukan. Pertama, penelitian lebih lanjut dapat dilakukan dengan membandingkan efektivitas pendekatan eclectik dengan pendekatan pembelajaran membaca lainnya, seperti pendekatan komunikatif atau pendekatan berbasis proyek, untuk mengidentifikasi pendekatan mana yang paling efektif dalam meningkatkan pemahaman membaca siswa. Kedua, penelitian dapat difokuskan pada pengembangan materi ajar eclectik yang lebih spesifik dan disesuaikan dengan kebutuhan siswa dengan tingkat kemampuan membaca yang berbeda-beda, termasuk siswa dengan kesulitan belajar membaca. Ketiga, penelitian lanjutan dapat mengeksplorasi pengaruh pendekatan eclectik terhadap aspek-aspek lain dari keterampilan berbahasa Inggris siswa, seperti kemampuan menulis, berbicara, dan mendengarkan, untuk memahami dampak holistik dari pendekatan ini terhadap perkembangan bahasa Inggris siswa secara keseluruhan. Penelitian-penelitian ini diharapkan dapat memberikan kontribusi yang lebih komprehensif terhadap pengembangan metode pembelajaran membaca yang efektif dan relevan bagi siswa.
