This research aimed to determine the achievement of sixth-semester students in the English Department of Muhammadiyah University of Makassar in understanding the pragmatic meaning of written utterances. A descriptive research method was employed, with a sample of 40 students selected through simple random sampling. The research instrument was an objective test consisting of 35 items designed to identify locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary acts. Data obtained from the test were analyzed quantitatively, yielding mean scores of 5.87 for locutionary act, 6.12 for illocutionary act, and 6.09 for perlocutionary act. The results indicated that the students achievement in understanding the pragmatic meaning of written utterances, particularly the three layers of speech acts, was fair.

The research concludes that sixth-semester students of the English Department at Muhammadiyah University of Makassar demonstrate a fair level of achievement in comprehending the pragmatic meaning of written utterances, specifically across the three layers of speech acts. This is evidenced by the overall mean score of 6.The study highlights the need for careful instruction in related linguistic areas such as semantics, pragmatics, syntax, and discourse analysis, as these subjects are often perceived as challenging by students.Further attention to these areas is crucial for enhancing students understanding of language use and interpretation.

Based on the findings, future research could explore the specific difficulties students encounter when identifying and interpreting each layer of speech acts – locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary – through qualitative methods like think-aloud protocols or interviews. Additionally, a study investigating the impact of explicit instruction in pragmatic competence on students reading comprehension skills would be valuable, potentially employing a quasi-experimental design with control and experimental groups. Finally, research could examine the correlation between students understanding of pragmatics and their ability to produce appropriate and effective written communication in various academic contexts, such as essays or research reports, to better inform pedagogical practices and curriculum development. These investigations will contribute to a more nuanced understanding of pragmatic competence and its role in English language learning.
