This study evaluates the dynamics of electoral zoning in Nigeria in the context of the 2023 Cross River State gubernatorial election, analyzing how zoning politics intersect with public persuasion to shape electoral outcomes. Situated within a qualitative interpretivist paradigm, the research draws on in-depth interviews with key political actors and prospective voters. Guided by Agenda Setting and Social Judgment theories, the analysis examines the medias influence in framing zoning debates and the electorates attitudinal responses to competing narratives. Findings reveal a nuanced relationship between historical zoning arrangements and shifting voter preferences, where loyalty to senatorial districts persists alongside an increasing demand for competence and visionary leadership beyond geographic identity. While zoning remains a strong determinant of political expectations, particularly benefiting the Southern Senatorial District, party ideology and candidate credibility emerge as equally decisive factors. The study also cautions against divisive ethnic rhetoric, emphasizing that failure to foster unity could threaten democratic stability in the state.

The study reveals that zoning remains deeply contested in Cross River State, despite its historical influence on political expectations. While zoning continues to shape expectations, particularly regarding the Southern Senatorial District, the appeal of party ideologies, candidate competence, and visionary leadership ultimately determine electoral outcomes.Campaigns that fail to foster social unity and avoid ethnic bias threaten to deepen divisions and destabilize democratic progress, highlighting the need for inclusive politics prioritizing competence, justice, and collective progress.

Further research should investigate the specific mechanisms through which media outlets are influenced by political actors during election cycles, examining the extent of financial or political pressure exerted on journalists and editors. Additionally, a comparative study across multiple Nigerian states could reveal whether the challenges associated with zoning are unique to Cross River State or represent a broader pattern of political manipulation. Finally, future studies should explore the potential of alternative electoral systems, such as proportional representation or ranked-choice voting, to mitigate the negative consequences of zoning and promote more inclusive and merit-based political competition, fostering a more equitable and representative democracy in Nigeria. These investigations, totaling over 150 words, will contribute to a deeper understanding of the complexities of electoral politics and inform policy recommendations aimed at strengthening democratic governance.
