This article discusses the implementation of Friday prayers during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia. By examining the contents of 67 Friday prayers sermons from 67 mosques in Semarang, Central Java, in-depth interviews with ʿulamāʾ, and journalistic reports, we argue that, firstly, a growing trend of religious conservatism influenced the reasons behind the performance of Friday prayers. Secondly, most Islamic preachers, mosque administrators, and religious leaders ignored scientists advice on appropriate COVID-19 health protocols. Finally, there was a sense of bewilderment at mosques, caused by poor communication and ambiguous messages from the government and Islamic mass organizations.

The study reveals a strong influence of rising religious conservatism on the continuation of Friday prayers during the pandemic, despite health protocols.A key finding is the disregard for scientific advice by religious elites, driven by religious reasoning.Furthermore, the ambiguous communication from both the government and Islamic organizations contributed to confusion and hindered effective pandemic response.

Future research should investigate the role of social media in disseminating religious interpretations of the pandemic and influencing behavior. Another avenue for study is the effectiveness of different communication strategies employed by religious leaders and government officials in promoting public health measures. Finally, a comparative analysis of pandemic responses in different Indonesian cities, considering variations in religious demographics and local governance, could provide valuable insights for improving future crisis management.
