BLESSBLESS

This research aimed at finding out the effectiveness of Herringbone technique in teaching reading comprehension to the Eighth Grade Students of SMP Nahdlatul Ulama Palembang. This research employed 174 of the eighth-grade students to be the population and 60 students were selected as the sample of the research through two stage random sampling. To collect the data, the researchers used tests, in terms of pretest and posttest. To analyze the data, the researchers applied T-Tests in line with paired sample t-test and independent sample t- test. The results of the showed that the value of sig (2-tailed) was 0.003 less than significant level p>0.05 for 2- tailed. So, the null hypothesis (H₀) was rejected, and alternative hypothesis (Hₐ) was accepted which means that herringbone technique was effective in teaching reading comprehension to the eighth-grade students of SMP Nahdlatul Ulama Palembang.

The study concluded that the use of the herringbone technique was effective in teaching reading comprehension to eighth-grade students at SMP Nahdlatul Ulama Palembang. This effectiveness was demonstrated by the statistically significant results of the t-tests, indicating a rejection of the null hypothesis and acceptance of the alternative hypothesis. The findings suggest that the herringbone technique can significantly improve students reading comprehension skills, particularly in narrative texts.

Based on the findings, future research could explore the application of the herringbone technique in diverse learning contexts, such as different grade levels or with students possessing varying reading abilities, to assess its broader applicability. Furthermore, investigating the integration of the herringbone technique with other reading strategies, like think-alouds or reciprocal teaching, could reveal synergistic effects on comprehension. Finally, a qualitative study exploring students perceptions and experiences with the herringbone technique could provide valuable insights into the cognitive processes involved and identify potential areas for refinement of the technique to maximize its impact on reading comprehension and engagement. These investigations would contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of how to effectively leverage the herringbone technique to enhance reading instruction and foster a love of reading among students.
