This study aims to analyze the forms and values of epistemic modality in Glaspells Trifles. The story narrates a mysterious, dynamic atmosphere in thematic exploration of gender and power between male and female characters. This study employs Hallidays Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) framework to examine the expressions of certainty and uncertainty shown in the dialogues of the characters. The findings reveal that the female characters use epistemic modality more dominantly (67.3%) than the male characters (32.7%). In terms of epistemic markers, the most dominant forms are positive modal verbs (32.7%) and positive mental clauses (30.2%). This denotes that the characters utilize more direct attempts to express probability. As for the values of epistemic modality, there is a balanced occurrence of low and median values at 40.1% each. This indicates the consistent use of uncertainty markers to invoke the ambiguity in this mysterious genre.

The analysis of linguistic expressions of certainty and uncertainty in Glaspells Trifles reveals significant insights into the distinctive roles of male and female characters in the story.The female characters utilize epistemic expressions more frequently (67.7%), indicating a deeper observation and greater uncertainty.The study identifies seven types of epistemic markers, with positive modal verbs and positive mental clauses being the most dominant.The balanced occurrence of low and median values of epistemic modality (40.1% each) contributes to the overall tone of ambiguity in the narrative, emphasizing doubt and speculation.

Penelitian lebih lanjut dapat dilakukan untuk mengeksplorasi bagaimana penggunaan epistemic modality oleh karakter perempuan dalam Trifles mencerminkan strategi resistensi terhadap norma-norma sosial patriarki yang berlaku pada awal abad ke-20. Selain itu, studi komparatif dapat dilakukan dengan menganalisis karya-karya drama feminis lainnya untuk mengidentifikasi pola-pola penggunaan epistemic modality yang serupa atau berbeda dalam merepresentasikan pengalaman dan perspektif perempuan. Terakhir, penelitian dapat difokuskan pada bagaimana pembaca merespons dan menginterpretasikan penggunaan epistemic modality dalam Trifles, serta bagaimana hal ini memengaruhi pemahaman mereka terhadap tema-tema gender, kekuasaan, dan kebenaran yang diangkat dalam drama tersebut. Penelitian-penelitian ini diharapkan dapat memberikan wawasan yang lebih mendalam tentang peran bahasa dalam membentuk dan merefleksikan konstruksi sosial serta identitas gender.
