With the increasing focus on sustainability and resource efficiency, interest in the secondhand market as a vital segment of the circular economy has also risen tremendously. This paper offers a bibliometric analysis of the changing features of the secondhand market that focus on circular economy aspects and technological development that transform this market. In the scope of this review, we strive to establish how the integration of circular strategies such as reuse, recycling, and product life extension as well as advances in technology have improved market efficiency, accessibility experiences for consumers, and efficiency on nature. Important conclusions emphasize the role of digital platforms, blockchain, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things in improving the efficiency of product tracking, trust, and transaction transparency in the secondhand market. The knowledge acquired proposes ways in which some of the stakeholders can implement technological solutions to the circular economy and enhance the concept of circularity in the economy.

This study concludes that the secondhand market is a crucial component of the circular economy, facilitating reuse and reducing waste. The integration of digital technologies like blockchain, AI, and IoT is transforming the market by enhancing trust, traceability, and efficiency. However, challenges remain regarding standardization, data privacy, and equitable access, requiring further research and policy interventions to ensure sustainable and inclusive growth.

Future research should investigate the impact of digital platforms on consumer behavior in secondhand markets, exploring how to encourage responsible consumption and mitigate potential rebound effects. Furthermore, studies are needed to assess the effectiveness of different policy interventions, such as Extended Producer Responsibility schemes, in promoting circularity within the secondhand sector, particularly in developing economies. Finally, research should focus on developing scalable and inclusive technological solutions that address data privacy concerns and ensure equitable access to the benefits of the circular economy for all stakeholders, including small-scale vendors and consumers in underserved communities. These investigations should consider the interplay between technological advancements, consumer attitudes, and regulatory frameworks to foster a truly sustainable and resilient secondhand market ecosystem.
