LingPoet: Journal of Linguistics and Literary ResearchLingPoet: Journal of Linguistics and Literary ResearchThis study is conducted to discuss in more detail about a translators strategy to translate the source language (SL) into the target language (TL), in particular the translation about cursing terms in movie Lara Ati. It is a descriptive qualitative design. This study focuses on swear words, phrases and sentences produced by the cast. The data in this study were collected through several steps, namely watching, identifying, making notes, and classifying the data. This study used Andersson & Trudgill (1990)s theory and molina and albir (2002)s theory. The results show the techniques most often used by translators are adaptation and amplification with 5 frequencies each. This study also found that the most frequent swear word in the movie yowis ben 3 is expelative as many as 14 data.
This research identified four types of cursing term functions – expletive, abusive, auxiliary, and humorous – with expletives being the most frequent.The translator predominantly employed adaptation and amplification techniques, prioritizing cultural equivalence and maintaining dialogue flow.The study highlights the influence of both linguistic and cultural factors on translation choices, particularly in rendering Javanese cursing terms into English subtitles.This research can serve as a reference for future studies on translation techniques and cursing terms, potentially expanding to include gender, age, or location-based analyses, as well as translation quality assessments.
Further research should investigate the impact of translator demographics (age, gender, cultural background) on the choices made when translating cursing terms, as these factors may influence the level of adaptation or omission employed. Additionally, a comparative study analyzing the translation of cursing terms across different genres (comedy, drama, action) could reveal how contextual factors shape translation strategies. Finally, exploring the reception of translated cursing terms by target audiences through surveys or focus groups would provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of different translation techniques and their potential for causing offense or misunderstanding. These investigations, building upon the current studys foundation, will contribute to a more nuanced understanding of the complexities involved in translating culturally sensitive language and ensuring effective cross-cultural communication. Such research is crucial for improving the quality of subtitling and dubbing, enhancing audience engagement, and avoiding unintended misinterpretations of the original content. The findings could also inform translator training programs, equipping future professionals with the skills and awareness needed to navigate these challenges effectively.
