Intimate partner violence is a global problem, including in South Africa. This qualitative study explored the lived experiences of victims of intimate partner violence who were financial providers and career-stable. Five face-to-face interviews were conducted with participants from Pretoria township communities. The interviews were analyzed using thematic content analysis, revealing themes of the aggressor being untouchable, fear for ones life, feeling helpless, desperate, and vulnerable, self-blame, and being trapped in the relationship. The study highlights the need for victims to have access to support beyond police services and guidance in social work to seek alternative ways to escape intimate partner violence, empowering them with courage, knowledge, and independence.

The study confirmed that staying in relationships with intimate partner violence victims is not always due to financial dependence.Fear, especially the fear of losing their lives at the hands of their abusive partners, was the primary reason for not leaving.Victims also experienced feelings of emptiness, desperation, imprisonment, shame, vulnerability, and weakness. The findings underscore the need for interventions that address the complex factors contributing to victims decisions to remain in abusive relationships and emphasize the importance of empowering victims to seek help and escape violence.
