The purposes of this research are to find out the types of politeness strategies used to save the face of the characters in Once Upon A Time season 1 and to identify the dominant scale of social dimensions when using politeness strategies in Once Upon A Time season 1. This research uses a qualitative-descriptive analysis method and to get the data needed in this research the writer did the following steps: watching the movies, transcribing the speech, searching the data, classifying the data, analyzing the data and drawing a conclusion related to the types of politeness strategies and the dominant scale of social dimensions. The source of the data used is taken from the serial film Once Upon A Time season 1 by Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz. The results of this research show that there are four types of politeness strategies found in the serial film Once Upon A Time season 1. They are 10 data of bald on-record (28.6%), 8 data of positive politeness strategies (22.9%), 13 data of negative politeness strategies (37.1%) and 4 data of off-record consists (11.4%) and the most dominant scale of four social dimension scales is social distance scale 14 data (40%).

Conclusion

This research identified four types of politeness strategies—bald on-record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off-record—present in the first season of Once Upon A Time.The study also revealed that the social distance scale was the most dominant social dimension influencing politeness strategies used by the characters.These findings demonstrate the interplay between politeness strategies and social context within the series, highlighting how characters navigate social interactions to maintain face and harmony.

Future Research

Further research could explore the impact of character relationships and power dynamics on the selection of politeness strategies in subsequent seasons of Once Upon A Time. Investigating how specific narrative arcs or plot developments influence the use of politeness could also provide valuable insights. Additionally, a comparative study examining politeness strategies across different fantasy or fairytale-based television series could reveal broader trends in how these themes are represented in popular media. These studies would contribute to a deeper understanding of the complex relationship between language, social interaction, and storytelling in the context of fictional worlds, potentially revealing how these dynamics reflect or challenge real-world social norms and expectations. This could involve analyzing how characters from different social backgrounds or with varying levels of power utilize politeness strategies to achieve their goals and navigate conflicts, offering a nuanced perspective on the role of language in shaping social hierarchies and relationships within the narrative.
