This study aims to examine the relationship between fatherlessness and mathematical mindset through self-esteem. The study used an ex post facto correlational research design involving 184 junior high school students. The fatherlessness scale, self-esteem scale, and mathematical mindset scale, all of which had been tested for validity and reliability, were used as instruments. Data analysis was performed using Andrew F. Hayes Process Model 4. The results showed that fatherlessness had a significant negative effect on self-esteem (β=-0.298, p<0.01). Self-esteem had a positive effect on mathematical mindset (β=0.384, p<0.01), and fatherlessness also had a direct negative effect on mathematical mindset (β=-0.167, p<0.01). In addition, there is an indirect mediating effect through self-esteem (β=-0.114, 95% CI [-0.184, -0.062]). The implications of the research results for guidance and counseling practices will be discussed.

This study reveals that fatherless experiences have a negative impact on the mathematical mindset of junior high school students, both directly and indirectly through self-esteem.The greater the experience of losing a father figure, the lower the students self-esteem, which ultimately affects their confidence in their mathematical thinking abilities.These findings confirm that psychosocial factors, particularly family conditions and self-esteem, play an important role in shaping students academic readiness and attitudes at school.

Penelitian lebih lanjut perlu dilakukan untuk memperluas cakupan sampel studi ini ke berbagai provinsi atau bahkan lintas negara guna memastikan generalisasi temuan. Selain itu, penelitian kualitatif mendalam dapat dilakukan untuk menggali lebih dalam pengalaman dan perspektif siswa mengenai pengaruh ketiadaan figur ayah, harga diri, dan pola pikir matematika mereka. Sebagai pengembangan, penelitian dapat difokuskan pada pengembangan dan pengujian intervensi berbasis sekolah yang bertujuan untuk meningkatkan harga diri siswa yang berasal dari keluarga tanpa ayah, serta mempromosikan pola pikir matematika yang positif. Intervensi ini dapat melibatkan program konseling kelompok, pelatihan keterampilan sosial-emosional, atau pendekatan pembelajaran yang berfokus pada pertumbuhan dan ketahanan diri. Terakhir, penelitian dapat mengeksplorasi peran faktor-faktor kontekstual lainnya, seperti dukungan sosial dari guru dan teman sebaya, serta pengaruh budaya dan norma masyarakat, dalam memoderasi hubungan antara ketiadaan figur ayah, harga diri, dan pola pikir matematika siswa.
