Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) is a disorder characterized by gastro‑esophageal and pharyngeal inflammation, but its pathophysiology remains incompletely understood. Autonomic dysfunction, particularly vagal nerve impairment, is hypothesized to contribute to LPR by promoting esophageal sphincter relaxation; heart rate variability (HRV) offers a non‑invasive marker of autonomic tone. In this cross‑sectional study of 74 pediatric patients (35 LPR, 39 controls), HRV was assessed via standard deviation of normal to normal (SDNN) and low‑frequency/high‑frequency (LF/HF) ratio. The results showed no significant difference in SDNN or LF/HF between LPR and non‑LPR groups (p>0.05), indicating that autonomic dysfunction measured by HRV was not associated with LPR in children.

Analisis HRV menunjukkan tidak ada perbedaan signifikan antara pasien LPR dan kontrol pada SDNN maupun LF/HF.Hasil tersebut menegaskan bahwa gangguan sistem saraf autonomi yang terukur dengan HRV tidak terkait secara statistik dengan LPR pada anak.Penelitian selanjutnya perlu mengevaluasi mekanisme LPR menggunakan metode penilaian autonomi lain selain HRV.

Para peneliti disarankan untuk merancang studi longitudinal yang memantau fluktuasi aktivitas autonomi dengan penggunaan teknologi wearable heart‑rate monitoring sehingga dapat mengamati perubahan dinamika HRV seiring dengan perkembangan gejala LPR pada anak. Selain itu, penelitian eksperimental dapat membandingkan efektivitas intervensi psikososial, seperti terapi relaksasi dan manajemen stres, terhadap perubahan parameter HRV dan perbaikan gejala LPR sehingga dapat menilai peran modulasi stres pada eksponensium penyakit. Akhirnya, integrasi data HRV dengan pencitraan endoskopi dan biomarker inflamasi (misalnya pepsin, sitokin) akan membantu mengidentifikasi korelasi biologis antar gangguan saraf, peradangan, dan gejala klinis, membuka jalan bagi pendekatan diagnostik dan terapeutik yang lebih terpersonalisasi.
