QiST: Journal of Quran and Tafseer StudiesQiST: Journal of Quran and Tafseer StudiesIn this digital era, religious practices are no longer confined to physical spaces but have also been transformed into digital spaces. This phenomenon is represented through the practice of Quran journaling which has recently become a trend on several social media platforms as an actualization of the activity of tadabbur al-Quran. Therefore, this study aims to determine how tadabbur al-Quran is manifested through practice Quran journaling that takes place in virtual communities on social media, and to understand the dynamics of meaning and internalization of Quranic values in this practice. The theory used in this study is Wolfgang Isers reception theory to understand the interaction between the text of the Quran and readers in practice Quran journaling. Using a netnographic approach, data was collected through participant observation, interviews, and documentation of the activities of the Indonesian Al-Quran Journal community, which takes place virtually. The research findings show that, the practice Quran journaling in this virtual community, it is structured through three stages, namely: Writing verses of the Quran along with their translations, understanding verses based on interpretation references and guidance learning menu, and personal reflection that connects the meaning of the verse with the context of everyday life. In this practice, community members take an active role as implied readers who fill in the gaps in the Quranic text through their life experiences and personal reflections, thereby forming a process of internalization and actualization of Quranic values. These findings indicate that Quran journaling is a contemporary form of tadabbur that broadens the understanding and application of the Quran in the digital sphere.
This study concludes that Quran journaling within the Indonesian Quran Journal Community is structured in three stages.writing verses and their translation, exploring meanings through tafsir, and composing personal reflections.Digital platforms facilitate these practices, transforming Quran journaling into a collective activity of tadabbur.Applying Wolfgang Isers reception theory reveals that community members actively fill textual gaps with personal experiences, fostering internalization and application of Quranic values.This research contributes to the development of Living Quran and digital religion studies by demonstrating how social media can be a reflective and educational tool.
Based on the findings, future research could explore the effectiveness of Quran journaling in fostering spiritual well-being and mental health among diverse demographics, moving beyond the scope of a single virtual community. Furthermore, a comparative study examining Quran journaling practices across different social media platforms and cultural contexts would provide valuable insights into the adaptability and universality of this contemporary form of tadabbur. Finally, investigating the role of digital literacy and technological access in shaping participation and engagement in Quran journaling could inform strategies for promoting inclusivity and expanding the reach of this practice to underserved communities, thereby enriching the digital religious landscape and fostering a more profound connection with the Quran for a wider audience. These avenues of inquiry promise to deepen our understanding of the evolving relationship between faith, technology, and individual spirituality in the modern world.
