Despite its common diasporic origin, English in Bangladesh is neither a native nor a second language, but a foreign language. The historical development of English in Bangladesh is influenced by both political and social factors, impacting English language learning at all educational levels. While curriculum restructuring occurred in the 1990s to align with communicative needs, research suggests learners bypass the cognitive aspects of language learning, hindering effective communication. Recent curriculum changes at the pre-tertiary level are still under evaluation. This study explores whether curriculum experimentation and resistance to acculturation, stemming from an anti-colonial mindset, impede language performance.

The study reveals a connection between socio-cultural factors and the challenges in the English curriculum in Bangladesh. This is potentially rooted in a diasporic dilemma where English is perceived as a legacy of colonization, leading to resistance. To address this, a curriculum with clear learning objectives and measurable outcomes is needed, alongside a pragmatic government approach that recognizes English as a global language essential for 21st-century learners.

Further research should investigate the specific socio-cultural factors hindering English language acquisition in Bangladesh, moving beyond a general sense of anti-colonial sentiment to identify nuanced attitudes and beliefs. Additionally, a comparative study examining the effectiveness of different curriculum models – including those emphasizing local contexts and incorporating elements of translanguaging – could provide valuable insights for curriculum development. Finally, research is needed to explore the impact of teacher training programs on their ability to address the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains of language learning, and to develop culturally responsive pedagogical practices. These investigations, totaling over 150 words, will contribute to a more informed and effective approach to English language education in Bangladesh, ensuring that the curriculum meets the needs of learners in a rapidly changing global landscape.
