Muhammad Abduh is a modern mufassir whose thoughts are widely studied by scholars, one of which is about the verse of jihad. Abduhs ideas about the interpretation of the verse of jihad have inspired the birth of new thoughts that are more accommodating to the times. The purpose of this paper is to explore Abduhs thoughts on jihad in the Quran; implement and analyze the challenges of Abduhs jihad interpretation for modern Indonesian society; and analyze the positive and negative impacts of the implementation offer. The method used is library research with a content analysis approach. The results revealed that Abduh understood jihad was not limited to military and war aspects, spiritual, moral, social, and educational struggles also included the meaning of jihad. Jihad is also understood as a continuous effort to improve oneself and society, uphold justice, and advance science and social reform; the implementation of Abduhs meaning of Jihad is very relevant and in line with the needs of a plural and dynamic Indonesian society. By integrating education, dialog, and active involvement from all components of society, it can encourage the creation of a more just, peaceful, and advanced society. The challenge is that there is resistance and rejection from traditional circles that hold fast to old thinking; the positive impact of Abduhs thinking is to encourage the constructive contribution of Muslims in various aspects of life and inspire a peaceful and progressive renewal movement. Meanwhile, the negative impact is the potential for internal conflict, because his offer of thought will face the traditionalist thinking adopted by most Indonesians.

Conclusion

Abduhs interpretation of jihad expands the concept beyond physical warfare to encompass spiritual, moral, social, and educational struggles.This interpretation is highly relevant to the needs of a pluralistic and dynamic Indonesian society, promoting positive contributions and inspiring a peaceful renewal movement.However, resistance from traditionalist circles and the potential for internal conflict pose challenges to its full implementation, necessitating a dialogical and educative approach.

Future Research

Further research should explore the practical application of Abduhs jihad interpretation in contemporary Indonesian education systems, examining how curricula can be adapted to promote a more holistic understanding of the concept. Additionally, studies could investigate the role of religious leaders and community organizations in mediating potential conflicts arising from differing interpretations of jihad, fostering interfaith dialogue and tolerance. Finally, research is needed to assess the effectiveness of counter-narratives against extremist ideologies that exploit the concept of jihad for violent purposes, focusing on the development of alternative narratives that emphasize peace, social justice, and constructive engagement within Indonesian society. These investigations should be conducted through qualitative methods, such as in-depth interviews and ethnographic studies, to gain a nuanced understanding of the lived experiences and perspectives of diverse stakeholders. The combined insights from these studies will contribute to a more informed and effective approach to promoting a peaceful and inclusive understanding of jihad in Indonesia, fostering social harmony and national development. This requires a minimum of 150 words to fully capture the complexity of these research directions.
