This study examines the gender responsiveness of management practices in two Protected Areas (PAs) in Luzon, Philippines: Mt. Calavite Wildlife Sanctuary (MCWS) and Mt. Arayat Protected Landscape (MAPL). Using a descriptive-quantitative approach, data were gathered through surveys and external assessments to evaluate the gender sensitivity of Protected Area Management Plans (PAMPs), staff composition, and gender-related initiatives. Findings reveal that although both PAs are rated as gender-aware in their PAMPs, gender imbalances persist in staffing, particularly in roles such as Forest Rangers, Information Officers, and Forest Attendants, which are occupied exclusively by one gender. Operational gaps were noted despite gender-responsive plans, especially in MAPL, where some staff believe men are not adequately informed about Republic Act No. 9710 (Magna Carta of Women), indicating a need for training. Funding limitations were also found to hinder the implementation of women-empowerment programs. The study recommends developing policies to eliminate gender bias in job assignments and promoting equal participation of all genders in PA management. Bridging the gap between planning and practice is essential to achieving inclusive, equitable, and sustainable conservation outcomes.

The study reveals a gender imbalance in staff composition within both the Mt.Calavite Wildlife Sanctuary (MCWS), with the disparity more pronounced in the MCWS.While both protected areas have Protected Area Management Plans rated as gender-aware, certain positions remain predominantly occupied by one gender. The findings highlight a need for training on Republic Act No.9710, the Magna Carta of Women, in MAPL, and suggest that funding limitations hinder womens empowerment programs.

Further research should investigate the specific socio-cultural factors contributing to gender imbalances in staffing within protected areas, moving beyond descriptive data to understand the underlying causes of these disparities. Additionally, a comparative study examining the effectiveness of different gender mainstreaming strategies in various protected area contexts within the Philippines could provide valuable insights for policy development. Finally, research is needed to assess the long-term impacts of gender-responsive management practices on biodiversity conservation outcomes and community livelihoods, specifically focusing on how inclusive approaches contribute to more sustainable and equitable conservation efforts, and this research should involve qualitative data collection methods to capture the lived experiences of both men and women involved in PA management, providing a more nuanced understanding of the challenges and opportunities for promoting gender equality in this sector. These investigations will require a minimum of 150 words to adequately address the complexities of gender dynamics and conservation effectiveness.
