The traditional Bataks belief the mythology of Mula Jadi Na Bolon, was believed as ultimate and absolute power, the creator of the world and everything inside the world. The Batak people worshiped Mula Jadi Na Bolon, offered offering and had ritual worshiping Mula Jadi Na Bolon. They called Mula Jadi Na Bolon as Debata, then this the word that I.L. Nommensen used to translate God as Debata in Bataks language. When the Christian Missionaries arrived among the Toba Batak people, they found the Toba Batak people to be a devoutly zealous people with the vivid awareness of religious power in the world around the Toba Batak people. While many of these religious notions were condemned by missionaries, Batak piety toward the dynamic activity of religious power was preserved in a Christian context. By using the qualitative research method, this article describes the theological approach acknowledging the traditional Bataks belief in Mula Jadi Na Bolon as High God. This article explores the Christian Mission approaching to the Batak people, how the missionary used the inculturation in Christian Missions method to approach the Batak people. This research describes how the Batak people shifted from the traditional belief to the Christian teaching.
This research proved that the seed of religion existed in the ritual and understanding of Mula Jadi Na Bolon in the traditional Batak belief.The cult of Mula Jadi Na Bolon impacted the cultural system established by the traditional belief, aiding the approach of Christian missionaries.The missionary work, particularly through Ingwer Ludwig Nommensens contextual methods, facilitated a shift in belief towards Christian teachings among the Toba Batak people.
Penelitian lebih lanjut dapat dilakukan untuk mengeksplorasi bagaimana konsep Mula Jadi Na Bolon memengaruhi aspek-aspek lain dari budaya Batak, seperti seni, musik, dan struktur sosial, serta bagaimana pengaruh tersebut berlanjut setelah masuknya agama Kristen. Selain itu, studi komparatif dapat dilakukan dengan membandingkan konsep ketuhanan dalam kepercayaan tradisional Batak dengan konsep serupa dalam agama-agama lain di Indonesia atau di dunia, untuk memahami universalitas dan keunikan dari kepercayaan tersebut. Terakhir, penelitian dapat berfokus pada peran Adat (hukum adat) dalam menjaga identitas budaya Batak di era modern, dan bagaimana Adat dapat diintegrasikan dengan nilai-nilai Kristen untuk menciptakan masyarakat yang harmonis dan berkeadilan.
