Postharvest losses worldwide are estimated at 50%, largely due to fungal and bacterial infections. Colletotrichum capsici Butler & Bisby is a significant fungus causing anthracnose disease. Growing concerns regarding chemical residues, fungicide resistance, and revoked registrations have spurred interest in safer, effective, and economically feasible alternatives to synthetic fungicides. Chitosan, a cationic polysaccharide, demonstrates a dual role by directly interfering with fungal growth and activating plant defense processes. This research investigates the effect of chitosan on the radial growth of C. capsici in vitro.

This experiment demonstrates that the colony diameter of C.capsici was inhibited by chitosan at concentrations of 0.75%, with higher concentrations resulting in greater growth inhibition.capsici hyphae, inducing lysis and cell disorganization.Furthermore, chitosan inhibited the germination and development of the germ tube of C.

Penelitian lebih lanjut perlu dilakukan untuk menguji efektivitas chitosan dalam mengendalikan penyakit antraknosa pada buah cabai secara in vivo, termasuk aplikasi di tingkat lapangan dan pengujian pada berbagai varietas cabai. Selain itu, studi mengenai mekanisme molekuler bagaimana chitosan berinteraksi dengan C. capsici, seperti perubahan ekspresi gen pada jamur tersebut, dapat memberikan pemahaman yang lebih mendalam tentang cara kerja chitosan sebagai agen pengendalian hayati.
