Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease with increasing prevalence, posing a significant health challenge. This study aimed to determine the effect of consuming sago (Metroxylon sagu Rottb) once a day on changes in blood glucose levels of Diabetes Mellitus sufferers in the Matandahi and Motui Community Health Center work area. A pre-experimental design with a one-group pre-test-post-test approach was employed, involving 30 type 2 DM patients. Results indicated a statistically significant decrease in blood glucose levels after sago consumption (p = 0.001). The findings suggest that daily sago consumption can positively impact blood glucose control in DM patients, warranting the implementation of public awareness campaigns regarding its benefits.

The study concludes that there is a significant effect of consuming sago once daily on blood glucose levels in diabetes mellitus patients within the Matandahi Community Health Center area. This suggests that incorporating sago into the diet can contribute to better blood glucose management. Therefore, it is recommended that the Matandari Health Center implement socialization programs to educate patients about the importance of sago consumption for managing diabetes mellitus.

Further research should investigate the optimal amount of sago consumption for diabetes management, considering individual patient characteristics and dietary needs. Additionally, studies could explore the specific components within sago responsible for its blood glucose-lowering effects, potentially identifying novel therapeutic targets. Finally, research is needed to assess the long-term impact of regular sago consumption on diabetes complications and overall health outcomes, including cardiovascular health and kidney function, to provide a comprehensive understanding of its benefits and risks. These investigations will contribute to evidence-based dietary recommendations and improved diabetes care strategies, particularly in regions where sago is a readily available and culturally accepted food source, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for individuals living with diabetes.
