The aim of this study is to examine the experiences of girls living in IDP camps in Benue State, Nigeria, and what FBOs could do to ameliorate their sufferings. The conflict in Benue State has occurred between the Fulani pastoralists and the indigenous people of Benue, leading to the displacement of thousands of girls. This study investigates the conditions girls live in IDP camps, the causes of their mistreatment, and the impacts of abuse. Thirty in-depth interviews were conducted with female IDPs in Makurdi, Guma, and Agatu camps, using content analysis to identify emergent themes. The study reveals that girls in Benue States internally displaced camps endure appalling living conditions, including limited access to basic amenities, a high risk of sexual exploitation, and few opportunities for employment and education.

Girls in IDP camps in Benue State face significant challenges including overcrowding, poor sanitation, and a lack of psychological support. These conditions contribute to various forms of abuse, such as sexual violence, exploitation, and increased vulnerability to health risks. The study highlights the urgent need for comprehensive interventions from faith-based organizations and other stakeholders to address the specific needs of girls in these camps and ensure their safety, well-being, and access to essential services.

Further research should investigate the long-term psychological impacts of displacement and abuse on girls in Benue State IDP camps, exploring the effectiveness of different trauma-informed care approaches. Additionally, studies could examine the role of community-based protection mechanisms and traditional conflict resolution methods in preventing gender-based violence within the camps. Finally, research is needed to assess the sustainability of livelihood programs designed for displaced girls, focusing on skills development and economic empowerment initiatives that address the root causes of vulnerability and promote self-reliance. These investigations should consider the unique cultural context of Benue State and involve collaboration with local communities, faith-based organizations, and government agencies to ensure relevant and impactful outcomes. A comprehensive understanding of these factors will be crucial for developing effective strategies to protect and empower girls affected by displacement and conflict, fostering their resilience and enabling them to rebuild their lives.
