Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) patients need to have strong effort, desire, and belief in themselves to complete anti-tuberculosis drug (ATD) therapy. A preliminary study conducted on 30 patients observed that there were 12 patients (40%) with a history of incomplete ATD therapy due to non-adherence. This study aims to determine the relationship between self-efficacy and medication adherence in pulmonary TB patients.

The relationship between self-efficacy and adherence to taking ATD is a strong and unidirectional relationship.Families are expected to provide support to improve the self-efficacy of pulmonary tuberculosis patients, such as giving confidence to patients to be able to complete TB treatment. This support can be achieved by instilling confidence in patients and consistently reminding them about their medication schedules.

Future research could explore the effectiveness of tailored interventions designed to enhance self-efficacy among pulmonary TB patients, considering individual patient characteristics and social support systems. Furthermore, investigating the role of healthcare providers in fostering self-efficacy through effective communication and patient education is crucial. Finally, longitudinal studies are needed to assess the long-term impact of self-efficacy on treatment outcomes and to identify potential predictors of sustained adherence, ultimately contributing to improved TB control strategies. These studies should incorporate qualitative methods to gain a deeper understanding of patients experiences and perspectives, allowing for the development of more patient-centered and effective interventions. The combined insights from quantitative and qualitative approaches will provide a more comprehensive understanding of the complex interplay between self-efficacy, adherence, and treatment success in pulmonary TB.
