The implementation of Curriculum 2013 brought changes to students admissions to high school/vocational level. Students are required to choose their course earlier, with or without trial time, which marks the importance of career planning and efficacy to decide their future career for students since junior-high. This study examined the role of career exploration behavior (CEB) as a mediator between career-related parental support (CRPS) and career decision-making self-efficacy (CDSE). Data were obtained from 140 junior-high school students on grade VIII and IX in the 2018/2019 school year. The regression analysis showed that CRPS has significantly influenced relations with CDSE, with CEB only has a small role in partially mediating their relationship. The result is fit with the social cognitive career theory (SCCT). Other results obtained from the additional analysis, instrumental assistance, and verbal encouragement were able to influence the CDSE directly, but emotional support indirectly influences CDSE through CEB as mediator. These results may be affected by Indonesians collectivist culture, which able to play a role in adolescents development and their capacity to make their career-choice independently.

This study demonstrates a significant influence of parental support on students career decision-making self-efficacy, with career exploration playing a partial mediating role. The findings align with the Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT).Furthermore, instrumental assistance and verbal encouragement directly impact self-efficacy, while emotional support indirectly influences it through career exploration. These results suggest that Indonesias collectivist culture may influence adolescents career choices and their reliance on parental guidance.

Future research should investigate the impact of different types of parental involvement, beyond the four examined in this study, on students career decision-making processes, considering the evolving dynamics of family relationships in the digital age. Exploring the role of school counselors and career guidance programs in complementing parental support, particularly in addressing the unique challenges faced by students in Indonesias educational system, is also crucial. Additionally, longitudinal studies are needed to track the long-term effects of early career exploration and parental support on students career paths and overall well-being, accounting for potential mediating factors such as socioeconomic status and access to resources. Finally, research should delve deeper into the cultural nuances of career decision-making in Indonesia, examining how collectivist values and societal expectations influence students aspirations and choices, and how interventions can be tailored to effectively address these cultural factors to promote more informed and autonomous career decisions.
