This historical research examines the messages conveyed through the architectural art of an ancient mosque, the Cirebon Panjunan Red Mosque, which was built by Arab descendants living in Java in 1480 AD. In Indonesia, the acculturation between Islamic culture and traditional values resulted in the uniqueness of mosques architectural buildings and ornaments. In addition to being a place of worship, mosques became an art form rich in symbols, representing historical, religious, and philosophical values. This qualitative research with historical methods seeks to investigate the visual narrative in the ancient mosque by implementing a series of historical research stages, including heuristics, criticism, and data interpretation. As pictures convey a narrative as well as words, visual narrative can be used to discover the values of the past. The results of the research have unveiled messages of history and culture regarding Islams development during the Cirebon sultanate. In addition, the history of the Panjunan Red Mosque was described. Hopefully, this research can contribute to new knowledge on the past Islamic development in Indonesia and the wisdom of peaceful acculturation.

The Panjunan Red Mosque in Cirebon is closely related to the social system of the region, reflecting cultural acculturation through its architectural elements. The mosques visual elements reveal the historical development of Islam in Cirebon, showcasing a blend of Arab, Chinese, and Indonesian influences. The mosque serves not only as a place of worship but also as a symbol of the regions religious life, social interactions, and cultural development, highlighting Cirebons history as a trading hub and a center of religious tolerance.

Further research could explore the specific techniques used in the creation of the porcelain decorations on the mosque, analyzing the materials and craftsmanship to understand the trade networks and artistic exchanges of the time. Additionally, a comparative study of the Panjunan Red Mosque with other mosques in the Cirebon region and across Java could reveal broader patterns of architectural acculturation and the unique adaptations of Islamic architecture to local contexts. Finally, investigating the contemporary role of the mosque within the local community, including its social and economic impact, and the perceptions of its historical and cultural significance, would provide valuable insights into its continued relevance and preservation for future generations. These studies should involve detailed architectural surveys, material analysis, ethnographic fieldwork, and oral history interviews to provide a comprehensive understanding of the mosques past, present, and future.
