In the 21st century, the representation of Black people in many U.S. movies is still problematic, as these films often perpetuate stereotypes depicting Black people as disrespectful and unintelligent compared to other races. Despite attempts to present alternative perspectives, completely eliminating these stereotypes remains a challenge. Through an analysis of cinematic aspects, dialogues, symbols, sounds, and music, this paper examines the stereotypes of Black characters in Jordan Peeles Get Out (2017) using discourse analysis. The study observes that the films representation still distinguishes Black from White in terms of prioritizing the body over the mind in Black masculinity, incivility, and distinct racial labor. Consequently, despite the movies efforts to empower them, Black characters are often portrayed as inferior to White characters. The use of music also emphasizes the power dynamics between the two races. Ultimately, the analysis reveals that stereotypical depictions of Black people persist even in films aiming for empowerment, highlighting the need for thorough monitoring of racial representation.

This analysis reveals that despite attempting to empower Black characters, the movie Get Out (2017) still incorporates problematic depictions aligned with existing stereotypes in U.These stereotypes manifest in the emphasis on physicality over intellectuality in Black masculinity, the portrayal of incivility, and the reinforcement of a distinct labor division between Black and White characters. The persistence of these representations underscores the ongoing need for critical examination of racial depictions in popular culture and highlights the challenges in fully dismantling deeply ingrained prejudices.

Future research could explore the role of cinematography and visual symbolism in reinforcing or challenging racial stereotypes within the film, moving beyond the analysis of dialogue and music. Another avenue for investigation lies in a comparative analysis of Get Out with other films that tackle similar themes of race and power, examining the effectiveness of different narrative and stylistic approaches in promoting nuanced representation. Finally, given the films cultural impact, a study focusing on audience reception and interpretation of the films racial dynamics, particularly among different racial groups, would provide valuable insights into how Get Out contributes to or alters public perceptions of race and identity. Investigating these areas will add comprehensive understanding of racial dynamics and how they play in a cinematic way, providing perspectives on both production and consumption sides.
