Stingless bees, known as kelulut, are honey-producing bees that lack a sting. Beekeeping is currently being developed in Kuantan Singingi, but research on the adaptability and honey production of Heterotrigona itama from natural colonies is limited. This preliminary study aimed to enhance understanding and provide valuable insights to the community regarding the adaptability and honey production of Heterotrigona itama from natural colonies in the Kuantan Singingi district. The research, conducted in Central Kuantan using 10 natural colonies, involved surveys and field trials. The acceptance rate of box topping by the colonies was found to be an average of 82.3 days, with an average honey volume of 4.1 ml per pot and a total volume of 93.7 ml per colony. Honey pot production lasted 93.6 days, yielding an average of 22.8 honey pots over six months.

The study revealed that rubber plants serve as the primary source for Heterotrigona itama colonies found in their natural habitat. The average time for the colonies to accept box topping was 82.3 days, and honey pot creation took 93.6 days, resulting in an average of 22.These findings contribute to a better understanding of the adaptability and production potential of Heterotrigona itama in the Kuantan Singingi region.

Further research should investigate the impact of different types of vegetation on the honey production and colony health of Heterotrigona itama, as the availability of diverse nectar sources is crucial for optimal yields. Additionally, a comparative study examining the genetic diversity of Heterotrigona itama colonies across various locations in Kuantan Singingi could reveal variations in adaptability and honey quality, informing targeted breeding programs. Finally, exploring the potential of integrating Heterotrigona itama beekeeping with existing agricultural practices, such as rubber plantations, could provide synergistic benefits for both pollination and honey production, enhancing the sustainability of local ecosystems and supporting the economic livelihoods of farmers. These investigations, building upon the current study, will contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of Heterotrigona itama and its role in the regions biodiversity and agricultural landscape.
