PPSDP International Journal of EducationPPSDP International Journal of EducationEnvironmental Education programs like Indonesias Adiwiyata are widely implemented, yet their integration with faith-based curricula to foster ecological stewardship has received little scholarly attention. This study aims to describe the implementation of adiwiyata material in PAI learning and its implications for students at State Vocational High School 2 Pacitan. A qualitative case study was conducted at a nationally recognized Adiwiyata school, utilizing semi-structured interviews with teachers, classroom observations, and document analysis. The results showed: (1) Environmental conservation is carried out by Vocational High School 2 Pacitan through the existence of green open spaces, green houses, family medicinal plants (toga), ablution water waste management, and waste management through waste banks, and others, (2) The implementation of adiwiyata materials in PAI subjects is carried out by integrating through learning, which includes planning, implementation, and evaluation. (3) Some of the implications resulting from the cultivation of environmental awareness in State Vocational High School 2 Pacitan students include: (a) realizing interaction for students with the environment, (b) students developing environmental awareness, (c) strengthening students environmental ethics.
The Adiwiyata program, initiated by Indonesias Ministry of Environment and Forestry, promotes environmental awareness and sustainable practices through education.SMKN 2 Pacitan has integrated environmental awareness into its vision, mission, and teaching practices, including Islamic Religious Education.This integration fosters students ecological awareness, strengthens their environmental ethics, and encourages responsible environmental stewardship.
Further research should explore the application of Adiwiyata-based Islamic Religious Education in diverse school settings, such as Islamic boarding schools, to assess its broader impact on students ecological awareness. Longitudinal studies are needed to understand the long-term development of students environmental attitudes and behaviors. Additionally, developing a comprehensive model of Green Islamic Education that synergizes religious values with environmental ethics could provide a framework for promoting sustainable practices and fostering a deeper sense of responsibility towards the environment. Considering the schools existing waste management practices, future studies could investigate the feasibility of implementing a circular economy model within the school, focusing on reducing waste generation, reusing materials, and creating value from waste streams. Furthermore, research could explore the potential of integrating local ecological knowledge and traditional environmental practices into the curriculum, enhancing students understanding of the unique environmental challenges and opportunities within their community. Finally, investigating the effectiveness of teacher training programs focused on integrating environmental themes into Islamic Religious Education could contribute to building capacity and promoting widespread adoption of sustainable pedagogical approaches.
