This study explores the social construction of spinsterhood among the Pekal Tribe, who predominantly inhabit Napal Putih in North Bengkulu Regency. The research investigates the socio-cultural meanings attached to unmarried women of a certain age and their implications for womens social status and mental well-being in the community. Utilizing a qualitative approach and a case study method, the study involved five Pekalese women—both married and unmarried—as primary informants. Data were collected through interviews and documentation, and validated using source triangulation. The analysis followed the Miles and Huberman framework, involving data reduction, display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that being labeled a spinster is associated with negative connotations in Pekal society, driven by patriarchal culture, limited educational awareness, economic hardship, and strong societal expectations that women marry before the age of 25. These factors collectively shape a perception that unmarried women are socially undesirable. Applying Berger and Luckmanns Social Construction Theory, the study illustrates how societal norms are formed through externalization, objectification, and internalization, surrounding the stigma of spinsterhood. As a result, the concept evolves into a socially constructed label that significantly influences womens opportunities, autonomy, and psychological health within the Pekal community.

The study concludes that the social construction of spinsterhood among the Pekal Tribe is a deeply ingrained system of meaning that significantly impacts womens lives. This stigma is perpetuated through cultural norms, religious interpretations, economic pressures, and social surveillance, leading to negative consequences for unmarried womens social status and mental well-being.While societal pressures are strong, women demonstrate varied responses, ranging from compliance to negotiation and resistance, highlighting their agency within these constraints.Further research is needed to explore the evolution of counter-narratives and potential for social change.

Based on the findings, future research could investigate the effectiveness of community-based interventions aimed at challenging patriarchal norms and promoting gender equality within the Pekal Tribe. Furthermore, a comparative study examining the social construction of spinsterhood across different ethnic groups in Bengkulu province could reveal nuanced cultural variations and common underlying factors. Finally, longitudinal research tracking the life trajectories of unmarried Pekal women over time, particularly those who pursue higher education or economic independence, would provide valuable insights into the long-term impacts of stigma and the potential for individual agency to reshape societal expectations. These studies should employ mixed-methods approaches, combining qualitative interviews with quantitative surveys to capture both the lived experiences and broader patterns of social change, and should prioritize the voices and perspectives of Pekal women themselves to ensure culturally sensitive and impactful research.
