Illegal industrial and mining activities in the upstream coastal area of West Aceh pose a risk of heavy metal pollution to raw water sources used by local communities. Chromium VI (Cr6 ) is a particularly harmful heavy metal due to its persistence in the body and its toxic effects on both humans and aquatic organisms. The Krueng Meurebo River, a primary source of raw water for the local community, is threatened by this potential contamination. This study aimed to analyze Cr6 exposure in the raw water source of the Krueng Meurebo River, West Aceh. Water samples were collected at three points along the river – Tuha Mosque, Ranto Panyang Barat, and Runding – and analyzed using a tablet reagent and a ZE-200 photometer. The results showed Cr6 concentrations of 0.10 mg/l at the Tuha Mosque and 0.08 mg/l at both Ranto Panyang and Runding, exceeding the permissible limit of 0.01 mg/l. These findings indicate significant Cr6 exposure in the Krueng Meurebo River, posing a serious threat to public health. An Environmental Health Risk Analysis (ARKL) is recommended to further assess the impact of Cr6 exposure, and measures to prevent and control industrial waste must be optimized to protect the environment and public health in West Aceh.

The study revealed that Cr6 concentrations in the waters of Tuha, Ranto Panyang, and Runding Mosques exceeded the maximum allowable limit of 0.These findings confirm significant contamination and highlight the urgent need for mitigation measures to reduce Cr6 levels and prevent further pollution.Elevated Cr6 levels pose serious health risks to communities relying on these water sources and can lead to the deterioration of the aquatic ecosystem.

Penelitian lebih lanjut perlu dilakukan untuk mengidentifikasi sumber-sumber spesifik pencemaran Cr6 di sepanjang Sungai Krueng Meurebo, termasuk meneliti limbah industri dan aktivitas pertambangan ilegal di daerah hulu. Studi ini dapat menggunakan teknik pelacakan isotop atau analisis sumber untuk menentukan kontributor utama polusi, sehingga memungkinkan implementasi strategi pengendalian yang lebih tepat sasaran. Selain itu, penelitian perlu dilakukan untuk mengevaluasi dampak jangka panjang paparan Cr6 terhadap kesehatan masyarakat di wilayah Aceh Barat, dengan fokus pada indikator kesehatan seperti kejadian kanker, penyakit ginjal, dan gangguan pernapasan. Penelitian epidemiologi yang komprehensif dapat membantu mengkuantifikasi risiko kesehatan yang terkait dengan konsumsi air yang terkontaminasi dan memberikan dasar ilmiah untuk kebijakan perlindungan kesehatan masyarakat. Terakhir, pengembangan dan pengujian teknologi pengolahan air yang efektif dan terjangkau untuk menghilangkan Cr6 dari sumber air baku Sungai Krueng Meurebo sangat penting. Penelitian ini dapat mengeksplorasi berbagai metode pengolahan, seperti adsorpsi, filtrasi, atau reduksi kimia, untuk menemukan solusi yang optimal dan berkelanjutan untuk mengatasi masalah pencemaran Cr6 di wilayah tersebut.
