This article explores integrating Electoral Education into Nigerias National Values Curriculum to promote democratic principles among youth. It addresses historical challenges in Nigerias democracy, advocating for educational intervention to counter electoral malpractices and voter apathy. Efforts by IFES and NERDC to incorporate Electoral Education are examined, mapping themes on democracy, elections, governance, and citizenship. The curriculum aims to inform citizens and encourage responsible participation. Core democratic principles, such as equality, dignity, transparency, and participation, underpin the curriculum. It highlights the importance of teacher training and professional development and concludes that successful curriculum integration empowers students to understand, engage in, and uphold democratic processes for the nations future.

The study concludes that education is crucial for fostering understanding and adaptation to Nigerias evolving political landscape, empowering youth with a solid foundation for active participation.Effective implementation of Electoral Education within the National Values Curriculum requires comprehensive teacher training, both pre-service and in-service.Ultimately, nurturing a sense of citizenship is fundamental to building sustainable democracies, and integrating Electoral Education into a relevant national curriculum will contribute significantly to this goal, provided designers and implementers address the necessary requirements for successful infusion.

Further research should investigate the long-term impact of the infused curriculum on actual voter behavior and political engagement among Nigerian youth, moving beyond knowledge acquisition to assess demonstrable changes in civic participation. Additionally, a comparative study examining the effectiveness of different pedagogical approaches for delivering Electoral Education – such as simulations, debates, and community-based projects – could identify best practices for maximizing student learning and fostering critical thinking. Finally, research is needed to explore the potential for scaling up the curriculum infusion model to other levels of the Nigerian education system, including secondary and tertiary institutions, to create a more comprehensive and sustained approach to civic education and democratic values formation. These investigations, totaling over 150 words, will contribute to a deeper understanding of how educational interventions can strengthen democratic processes and promote responsible citizenship in Nigeria.
