Enggano Island Flying Fox Pteropus hypomelanus enganus is an endemic subspecies of bats from Enggano Island, Sumatra, Indonesia. During a field visit to Enggano Island in 2020 and 2021, P. hypomelanus enganus was observed always active during daylight, including in flight, looking for food, puffing and cleaning the hair. Here, we report the diurnal activities of P. hypomelanus enganus that represent the first reported behavior for this taxa.

The study documented the diurnal activity of Pteropus hypomelanus enganus, a behavior previously unreported for this species.Observations revealed the bats were active during daylight hours, engaging in activities such as flying, foraging, and grooming.This finding suggests a unique adaptation within this subspecies, potentially linked to low predation risk and temporal niche partitioning on the isolated Enggano Island.

Penelitian lebih lanjut diperlukan untuk memahami mekanisme yang mendorong perilaku diurnal pada P. hypomelanus enganus, termasuk analisis mendalam mengenai adaptasi fisiologis dan perilaku yang memungkinkannya aktif di siang hari. Studi komparatif antara P. hypomelanus enganus dengan populasi Pteropus lainnya, baik yang diurnal maupun nokturnal, dapat mengungkap perbedaan genetik dan lingkungan yang berkontribusi pada divergensi perilaku ini. Selain itu, penting untuk melakukan pemantauan populasi jangka panjang dan penilaian ancaman terhadap P. hypomelanus enganus di Enggano Island, mengingat statusnya sebagai subspesies endemik yang rentan terhadap perubahan habitat dan iklim, sehingga dapat dirumuskan strategi konservasi yang efektif untuk melindungi kelestariannya di masa depan.
