Social, Ecology, Economy for Sustainable Development Goals JournalSocial, Ecology, Economy for Sustainable Development Goals JournalBackground: This study investigates the technical and economic feasibility of an on-grid rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) system for the Postgraduate Building of the Universitas Papua, West Papua, Indonesia. Amid rising energy demands and limited renewable energy utilization in the region, this research addresses the need for sustainable electricity solutions. Methods: The system was designed using Helioscope software, considering solar radiation, shading, and local climate data. The proposed configuration consists of 14 polycrystalline solar modules (320 Wp each) and one SMA Sunny Tripower 5.0 kW inverter. Results: Simulation results indicate that the system can produce approximately 5,660 kWh annually, covering 19% of the buildings electricity consumption. The estimated initial investment of IDR 137,200,000 yields annual savings of IDR 9,617,740, resulting in a payback period of 14 years and 2 months. Conclusion: The findings demonstrate the viability of rooftop solar power systems for reducing energy costs and enhancing sustainability in remote areas. The project serves as a replicable model for academic institutions seeking to adopt renewable energy technologies. Novelty: This study provides a localized case of solar PV deployment in West Papua, contributing empirical insights to regions with limited renewable energy integration and offering a practical approach to energy transition in underserved areas.
The study successfully designed and evaluated a 4.48 kWp rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) system at Universitas Papua, demonstrating its ability to generate approximately 5,660 kWh annually and reduce electricity consumption by 19%.This translates to annual cost savings of approximately IDR 9,617,740, confirming the systems economic viability.The research highlights the replicability of such systems in remote regions like West Papua, offering a sustainable model for institutional energy transition.
Further research should focus on integrating dynamic load modeling and real-time monitoring systems to improve the accuracy of performance predictions and optimize system operation. Exploring hybrid configurations, such as combining rooftop solar with battery storage or diesel backup, could enhance energy reliability and resilience, particularly in remote areas with intermittent grid access. Finally, investigating the role of informal sector participation and community-based financing models is crucial for promoting wider adoption of rooftop solar PV systems and ensuring equitable access to clean energy solutions in underserved communities. These investigations should consider the unique socio-economic context of West Papua, including local skills, resource availability, and community preferences, to develop tailored solutions that maximize impact and sustainability. A comprehensive assessment of the long-term environmental impacts, including lifecycle analysis of solar panel materials and end-of-life management strategies, is also warranted to ensure the overall sustainability of the system. Furthermore, research into policy incentives and regulatory frameworks that support rooftop solar deployment, such as net metering schemes or feed-in tariffs, could accelerate the transition to renewable energy in the region. These combined efforts will contribute to a more sustainable and resilient energy future for West Papua and similar remote communities.
