This study aims to analyze the meaning of each figurative language used in song lyrics of “The Tortured Poets Department album by Taylor Swift. The data include the lyrics of 16 songs in Taylor Swifts album “The Tortured Poets Department. This study employed content analysis method where the data is gathered by gathering all the lyrics of Taylor swifts songs in “The Tortured Poets Department album. The findings revealed that eleven from thirteen figurative language from Perrines theory was used in this album: simile, metaphor, personification, synecdoche, metonymy, symbol, allegory, paradox, irony, and allusion. Simile had 14%, metaphor had 4,3%, personification had 4,3%, synecdoche had 3,2%, metonymy had 20,4%, symbol had 11,8%, allegory had 1,0%, paradox had 2,1%, hyperbole had 15,0%, irony had 18,0%, and allusion had 5,3%. Metonymy is a figurative language that most used in the “The Tortured Poets Department song lyrics.

Conclusion

The research identified eleven types of figurative language from Perrines theory in Taylor Swifts album “The Tortured Poets Department, including simile, metaphor, personification, synecdoche, metonymy, symbol, allegory, paradox, hyperbole, irony, and allusion.Metonymy was found to be the most frequently used figurative language in the albums lyrics, enhancing the aesthetic and meaningful quality of the songs.The study suggests that the albums lyrics can serve as effective material for studying figurative language, improving vocabulary, and enhancing understanding of song meaning.

Future Research

Penelitian lebih lanjut dapat dilakukan dengan menganalisis dampak penggunaan bahasa figuratif terhadap interpretasi pendengar terhadap lagu-lagu Taylor Swift, dengan mempertimbangkan faktor-faktor seperti usia, latar belakang budaya, dan pengalaman pribadi. Selain itu, studi komparatif dapat dilakukan untuk membandingkan penggunaan bahasa figuratif dalam album “The Tortured Poets Department dengan album-album Taylor Swift sebelumnya, atau dengan karya-karya penyanyi lain, untuk mengidentifikasi tren dan perbedaan gaya bahasa. Terakhir, penelitian dapat mengeksplorasi bagaimana penggunaan bahasa figuratif dalam lirik lagu Taylor Swift mencerminkan atau memengaruhi norma-norma sosial dan budaya yang lebih luas, serta bagaimana hal ini berkontribusi pada popularitas dan pengaruhnya sebagai seorang seniman. Penelitian-penelitian ini diharapkan dapat memberikan pemahaman yang lebih mendalam tentang kompleksitas bahasa figuratif dalam musik populer dan dampaknya terhadap pendengar serta budaya.
