The concept of efficiency in conventional economics is generally interpreted as an effort to maximize output with minimal resource use. This approach tends to be oriented solely toward instrumental rationality and economic growth, without comprehensively considering ethical dimensions, distributive justice, and ecological sustainability. On the other hand, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agenda demands a development paradigm that is not only economically efficient but also socially just and environmentally sustainable. This article aims to reconstruct the concept of efficiency in Islamic economics through the maqasid al-shariah approach and analyze its relevance to achieving the SDGs. This research is a literature review with a conceptual-analytical approach to various primary and secondary sources related to efficiency theory, maqasid al-shariah, and the SDGs framework. The studys findings demonstrate that efficiency from an Islamic economic perspective is not solely oriented toward optimizing resources, but rather toward achieving welfare (maslahah), balance (mīzān), and holistic well-being (falah). Thus, maqasid-based efficiency simultaneously integrates economic, social, and ecological dimensions. This concept is substantive and compatible with the SDGs, particularly in terms of poverty alleviation, inequality reduction, inclusive economic growth, and environmental protection. This study confirms that Islamic economics is not only aligned with the global sustainable development agenda but also offers an ethical-transcendental foundation that enriches the discourse on efficiency in contemporary development theory.

This study reconstructs the concept of efficiency in Islamic economics by framing it as a normative instrument within the maqasid al-shariah framework and examines its relevance to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).The research demonstrates that conventional efficiency, focused on technical optimization, has limitations in addressing inclusive and sustainable development.Islamic economic efficiency, redefined through maqasid, encompasses substantive efficiency oriented towards welfare, distributive efficiency ensuring justice, and sustainable efficiency emphasizing ecological balance. This integration enriches the implementation of the SDGs by providing an ethical foundation and broadening the discourse on efficiency.

Further research should explore the development of quantifiable indicators for maqasid-based efficiency to facilitate practical application and measurement of its impact on sustainable development outcomes. Additionally, empirical studies are needed to assess the effectiveness of Islamic financial instruments, such as green sukuk and waqf, in achieving specific SDG targets, particularly those related to poverty reduction and environmental protection. Finally, research could investigate the integration of maqasid principles into national economic policies and development planning frameworks, examining the challenges and opportunities for mainstreaming Islamic economic ethics into broader sustainable development strategies. These investigations will contribute to a more nuanced understanding of how Islamic economics can actively support a just, equitable, and environmentally sustainable future, building upon the existing literature and policy initiatives while addressing gaps in current knowledge and practice. This research should involve case studies in diverse national contexts to assess the adaptability and effectiveness of maqasid-based approaches in different socio-economic environments.
