The Amprong River in Kedungkandang District, Malang City, is facing ecological pressure due to dense residential settlements and inadequate domestic waste management. This study was conducted to assess the diversity of macroinvertebrates and to investigate their role as indicators of water quality. A quantitative descriptive method was employed, with samples collected from three stations (upstream, midstream, and downstream) on both sides of the river. Temperature and pH were recorded as key environmental parameters, and the structure of the macroinvertebrate community was analyzed using the Shannon–Wiener diversity index (H), the evenness index (E), and Simpsons dominance index (C). A total of 633 individuals representing 13 species and 8 families were identified. The results revealed moderate diversity in most sampling points, while one site exhibited low diversity and high dominance by Melanoides plicarius, indicating heavy pollution. Variations in species composition and ecological indices between riverbanks were influenced by habitat differences, namely vegetation type, substrate, and waste exposure. Overall, the results suggest that the Amprong River is classified between moderately and heavily polluted, underscoring the importance of enhanced environmental management and adequate waste treatment facilities to support river conservation in urban settings.

The water temperature and pH of the Amprong River fall within the normal range, providing suitable conditions for macroinvertebrates.A total of 13 macroinvertebrate species were identified, representing 8 families. The analysis indicates that the Amprong River is in a polluted state, ranging from moderate to severe pollution levels, necessitating enhanced environmental management and waste treatment facilities.

Further research should investigate the correlation between specific pollutants, such as heavy metals and organic compounds, and the abundance of pollution-sensitive macroinvertebrate species to establish more precise water quality thresholds. Additionally, a longitudinal study tracking macroinvertebrate community changes over several years is needed to assess the long-term impacts of urbanization and pollution on the Amprong River ecosystem. Finally, research should explore the effectiveness of different bioremediation techniques, such as constructed wetlands or phytoremediation, in improving water quality and restoring macroinvertebrate diversity in the Amprong River, considering the specific characteristics of the river and surrounding land use. These studies will provide a more comprehensive understanding of the rivers ecological health and inform effective conservation strategies, contributing to the sustainable management of urban freshwater resources and the preservation of biodiversity within the region.
