Indonesia Journal of Local Wisdom EducationIndonesia Journal of Local Wisdom EducationThis study aims to explore moral development in early childhood by integrating perspectives from Jean Piaget, Lawrence Kohlberg, Martin Hoffman, and Jonathan Haidt through project-based learning. Using a quantitative approach, the study involved questionnaires completed by 28 early childhood education teachers regarding childrens religious and moral values in daily activities. The results of data analysis showed that project-based learning significantly improved childrens understanding of morality and religious values. Teachers reported improvements in moral aspects, such as empathy, justice and social responsibility, which are in line with Piagets theory of moral development, Kohlbergs stages of moral development, Hoffmans empathy and Haidts moral intuition. The study concludes that the integration of moral development theories in a project-based curriculum can enrich early childhood moral education, facilitating the internalisation of values through practical experience and social interaction. Recommendations for further research include the development of more comprehensive measurement instruments and the application of similar approaches across different cultural contexts.
The study reveals the effective integration of moral development theories—Piaget, Kohlberg, Hoffman, and Haidt—into a project-based curriculum enriches early childhood moral education.This approach facilitates the internalization of values through practical experience and social interaction, showing significant improvements in empathy, justice, and social responsibility.Ultimately, this research underscores the importance of holistic moral education in preparing children to be ethically responsible individuals.
Future research should explore the long-term effects of integrating these moral development theories into early childhood education, potentially tracking childrens ethical reasoning and behavior into adolescence and adulthood. It would be valuable to develop more culturally sensitive measurement instruments to assess moral development, acknowledging that expressions of morality may vary across different societies and communities. Furthermore, studies could investigate the effectiveness of this integrated approach within diverse educational settings, such as different socioeconomic contexts or with children with varying learning needs, to determine the adaptability and generalizability of the findings. These explorations would contribute to a more nuanced understanding of moral development in early childhood and inform best practices for educators and parents.
